Drive-in Racking System

The Drive-In Racking System is an efficient, high-density pallet storage system designed to maximize both horizontal and vertical warehouse space. Unlike selective pallet racking, drive-in racks eliminate the need for multiple aisles by allowing forklifts to drive directly into the racking structure to deposit or retrieve pallets.

This system uses rails mounted on the inside of upright frames to support pallets, which are stored several positions deep and stacked vertically in multiple levels. It is best suited for storing large volumes of uniform products with low turnover or non-perishable goods.

Depending on configuration, the system can function as:

  1. Drive-In (LIFO – Last-In, First-Out): Pallets are loaded and unloaded from the same side.
  2. Drive-Through (FIFO – First-In, First-Out): Pallets are loaded from one end and retrieved from the other.

Key Features:

  1. Maximizes use of floor and vertical space—up to 80% of available storage area.
  2. Reduces the number of aisles needed, allowing more storage positions.
  3. Ideal for storing large batches of the same SKU.
  4. Heavy-duty steel frame supports high-capacity loads.
  5. Adjustable rail levels and bay depths to accommodate different pallet sizes.
  6. Can be used in temperature-controlled or cold storage environments.

Applications:

  1. Warehouses storing seasonal or slow-moving inventory.
  2. Cold storage facilities for frozen or perishable goods.
  3. Industrial storage of raw materials or bulk finished goods.
  4. Distribution centers handling uniform product lines.

Advantages:

  1. Increases storage capacity without expanding the warehouse footprint.
  2. Reduces energy consumption in refrigerated storage by minimizing open space.
  3. Lowers handling time by centralizing similar products in deep storage lanes.
  4. Suitable for operations with minimal SKU variety.

Considerations:

  1. Limited direct access to each pallet; may affect picking speed.
  2. Requires skilled forklift operation in narrow lanes.
  3. Not ideal for products requiring strict FIFO rotation (unless configured as drive-through).
  4. Increased potential for rack damage due to forklift entry.

Conclusion:

The Drive-In Racking System is an excellent choice for facilities needing to store large quantities of similar items with high density and minimal access requirements. It is particularly effective in environments where maximizing space efficiency is a priority, such as cold storage, manufacturing, and bulk distribution.
